Return Categories

Since certain returns must be prepared by specific preparers or must be handled differently, CCH iFirm Tracking provides customized return categories allowing you to identify those returns so that they can be correctly assigned to staff members.

The return category of a tracking card is visible on the card overview and on the follow-up info tab.

Allocating categories to returns

A return category contains a set of tags. The tags are automatically allocated by CCH iFirm Tracking to a return based on the previous and current year data of a return. Tags that are allocated to a card are visible by clicking on .

A category is automatically allocated to a return based on the tags it was associated with in the Return Categories settings page. However, you can manually modify the category defined for a card.

Define return categories

Tracking – Settings

Three categories are defined by default in CCH iFirm Tracking: Deceased, Simple and Complex. The different tags have been split into these three categories. To meet the requirements of your firm, you can modify and delete these categories. You can also add new categories.

To define the card categories used by your firm, proceed as follows:

  1. 1. Go to Settings > Tracking.
  2. Click Return Categories.
  3. To add a category, click the button located to the right of existing categories.
To modify the name of a new category or an existing category, click the icon.
To delete a category, click the icon. The tags associated in the category will be moved to the Unassigned Tags section.
  4. Drag each CCH iFirm Taxprep or Taxprep tag to the appropriate category. . A tag can be associated to one category only.
  5. Click Save.

Note :
  • The category will automatically be allocated to a return if any of the tags associated with it matches.

  • The order in which the categories are set is important. They should be ordered based on their complexity, where the most complex category is the first one to the left and the least complex, to the right. When more than one category applies to a return, the category located to the far left will be assigned to the return. Therefore, make sure to drag each category to the appropriate position.

Modify the category of a return

You can override the category allocated to a return under Category in the card. When doing so, the category turns red to indicate the change.
