Line 996, Amended Tax Return – Description of Changes

This form is a multiple copy form. It allows you to file an amended tax return based on an initial tax return or a tax return which has been already amended. When you click the New amended tax return button, an empty copy of the form will be created and data on the previous copy will be retained in the history. The last copy created will always be the copy that becomes applicable and prints.

This form must be used to provide details on changes made in an amended return. It must be completed when you answer “Yes” on line 997, Is this an amended federal return? in the “Amended tax return” section of the Identification form.

Note that the text that you can enter on line 996 can contain a maximum of 500 lines and each line is limited to 78 characters. If you exceed this limit, the program will warn you. You will have to reduce the length of your text accordingly, because no additional paper note can be added.

You can export information using another application, such as a word processing program (e.g. Word). To do so, use the Copy and Paste standard editing commands to copy and paste the information in the appropriate box.
