T4 - Calculating the Automobile Benefit (AutoTax)

In order to access the automobile benefit screen, open the T4/RL-1 Data entry screen - Employment income. Double click on "Go to Form AUTOTAX" (you can also press F9). The employee's permanent data entered in the previous screen will automatically be carried over. Supply all the pertinent data (namely the cost of the car or of the rental, the period during which the benefit must be calculated and the number of kilometres for personal and business use) in order for the calculation of the federal and Québec taxable benefit to be carried out correctly.

Note: In order for the calculation of the benefit to be carried out for Québec purposes, the province of employment and home province in the T4-RL-1 data entry screen must be "QC."

If the employment consists primarily in selling or leasing automobiles, check the appropriate box on the AUTOTAX screen. When this box is checked, the percentage used to calculate the cost of use is lowered to 1.5% from 2% and the stand-by charge is $0.22 per kilometre instead of $0.25.

If the employer must remit the GST/HST or QST, check the appropriate box at the bottom of the T4 Summary. The calculations will appear on the employer summary.

To obtain further information, refer to the help line by line. The Standby Charge and Operating Cost Benefit help topics can also be accessed directly.

In addition to allowing you to complete the T4 and RL-1 slips, the automobile benefit calculation screen allows you to make calculation scenarios throughout the year.
